Man Utd face a Ruben Amorim wait.
Manchester United face having to wait until the November international break to appoint Ruben Amorim as the club’s new manager as Sporting dig their heels in. Ahead of the Red Devils’ 5-2 Carabao Cup win against Leicester City last night, technical director Jason Wilcox offered a three-word verdict to summarise an eventful week.
Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed an emotional occasion as interim manager at Old Trafford as United booked a quarter-final clash with Tottenham.
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scored two goals each, and Alejandro Garnacho added another to deem Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady’s strikes consolations.
And it appears like it won’t be the last time Van Nistelrooy takes caretaker charge, with United reportedly having to wait until the November international break for their new permanent boss.
The M16 giants have been locked in negotiations over Amorim’s backroom staff and 30-day notice period after triggering his £8.3m release clause.
According to The Telegraph, they have agreed to pay £1.7m extra to recruit his chosen coaches and to split his notice period in half.
Three days after United’s chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth sacked Erik ten Hag at Carrington, a deal looks to have been sealed for his successor.
Jason Wilcox has been busy this week.
The Manchester Evening News report that when asked whether it had been a busy week at Old Trafford before kick-off against the Foxes, Wilcox nodded and replied: “Yeah, busy week.”
Van Nistelrooy is primed to guide United into Sunday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea as the hosts bid to start fixing a disastrous start to the campaign.
The Dutchman is also believed to be overseeing next week’s home games against PAOK in the Europa League, as well as a rematch with Leicester in the league.
Meanwhile, Amorim will set sail on a mini farewell tour in Lisbon, facing Estrela Amadora and Braga in the Primeira Liga on either side of an eye-catching Champions League clash with Manchester City.
He is expected to bring a five-person team with him to Carrington, including long-time assistants Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido.
The duo are set to be joined by goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital, sports scientist Paulo Barreira and Emanuel Ferro.
On the other side of the November international break, Amorim will start his reign with a trip to Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.
The visit to Portman Road is followed by an Old Trafford homecoming against Bodo/Glimt before hosting Everton.
