David de Gea, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, has been dealt a brutal blow by Fiorentina following his return to football.

De Gea departed United in 2023 after a 12-year stint as the club’s primary goalkeeper. The Spanish star made 545 appearances for the Reds, clinching numerous major trophies during his tenure.

United allowed De Gea to exit the club as a free agent last summer, with Andre Onana stepping in as their new goalkeeper. Following his departure from Old Trafford, De Gea remained without a club for over a year.

Earlier this month, it was announced that De Gea had inked a one-year deal with Fiorentina, with an option to extend for another year. However, it appears that the United legend’s time at the Serie A club is not going as smoothly as expected.

De Gea made his debut for Fiorentina in their Europa Conference League qualifying match against Puskas Akademia. The 33-year-old let in two goals, including a penalty, in the early stages of the game, resulting in a 3-3 draw for the Italian club, who were considered strong favourites.

Just days after the draw, Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino decided to bench De Gea for the club’s subsequent match. On Sunday, the club faced Venezia in Serie A, with Pietro Terracciano chosen as the goalkeeper over De Gea, who was relegated to the substitutes’ bench.

Whether De Gea will get another chance to prove his worth as a No. 1 goalkeeper is yet to be seen.

Thursday night’s Europa Conference League qualifier sees Fiorentina taking on Puskas Akademia in an away match, with the victor advancing to the group stages of the competition.
