Erik ten Hag left new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim two welcome presents

Amidst the ruthless culling at the dawn of the Ruben Amorim era, Manchester United have retained Darren Fletcher and Andreas Georgson from Erik ten Hag’s coaching team. There was speculation about Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future after his unbeaten stint as interim manager, but he was among the confirmed exits earlier this week.

Van Nistelrooy, along with Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel, could not continue under new manager Amorim’s regime.

The 39-year-old has brought in his own staff from Sporting, leading to a mass exodus of many staff who arrived just months ago, but Fletcher and Georgson have stayed put.

Fletcher, who previously served as the club’s technical director before returning to a first-team coaching role, is seen as a vital link between the academy and the senior squad.

Under-21s boss Travis Binnion has often lauded Fletcher’s impact, and he is believed to be highly respected at Carrington.

Fletcher will continue to advise on which academy players should be promoted to the first team during Amorim’s tenure.

In a candid interview with Skanesport, set-piece specialist Georgson detailed his role alongside Amorim at the club.

“I am responsible for fixed situations, individual development and drive the work with our identity as a team together with the head coach,” he explained.

“The job was perfect, but the timing was bad. My first special competence is set pieces and throw-ins and that is also what we have prioritised during the first period.

“That’s where I have a unique knowledge bank and a unique method, which has worked in all clubs.”

He continued to outline his approach, stating: “Over time, we have also laid the foundations for the individual development programme and our identity as a team, and slowly, I have also started those processes, which is very fun.”

Georgson emphasised the importance of focused training.

“Few think it’s fun to practice, but everyone knows that a third of goals are scored on set pieces. I have to be clear to the players. ‘Less is more’ is often true,” he continued.

“I’d rather practice fixed situations with full attention for ten minutes than for two hours without commitment, these are details that can statistically decide five table positions up or down.”

With an impressive resume that includes stints at Brentford, Arsenal, and Southampton, Georgson was brought in by technical director Jason Wilcox in the summer.

He wasn’t directly chosen by Ten Hag, but he is nonetheless viewed as a valuable asset to support Amorim’s efforts.
