Amad Diallo opened the scoring for United in the first half
Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 victory in pre-season against Rangers on Saturday afternoon in a performance that Erik ten Hag will have learned plenty from.
Amad Diallo opened the scoring for United with a fine effort in the 39th minute, racing down the right wing before cutting onto his left foot and whipping a great strike beyond Jack Butland and into the bottom corner.
United then rotated their ranks at half-time, making 10 changes and fielding an entirely fresh outfield team. The changes sapped some of the momentum out of the match, but Joe Hugill ensured that his side would head to the USA in winning form with a fierce strike in the 70th minute.
Express Sport takes a look at four key talking points from the clash…
Ten Hag may have stumbled across two key players
With Casemiro and Antony both being linked with exits this summer, United may already have their replacements within their ranks. Diallo showed immense quality on the right wing throughout the first half and caused Rangers left-back Jefte countless problems to show that he can make an impact next season.
Similarly, Toby Collyer, 20, showed that he could be the next youngster to break into Ten Hag’s plans. The Englishman dictated the tempo of the clash, dropping deep to receive possession before spraying the ball out wide. Collyer evidenced how he could replace Casemiro in deeper areas too with his fierce tackling and relentless defensive work rate.
Jadon Sancho showed glimpses of promise against Rangers
Casemiro’s struggles continue for United
It has been reported previously that United would be willing to sell Casemiro this summer, and the Brazilian would not have attracted many more suitors with his display against Rangers.
The ex-Real Madrid star made several clumsy challenges and his range of passing left plenty to be desired – selling several of his teammates short before overhitting his pass to Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the counter-attack.
Sancho returns in good style
There were plenty of positives to take from Jadon Sancho’s display against Rangers, although the winger appeared to be trying to prove a point with his performance rather than showcasing what he has to offer.
Joe Hugill came off of the bench to double United’s lead

Man Utd ‘to allow Mason Mount to leave’ as huge call made on £60m man
The former Borussia Dortmund’s fancy flicks did not come off for him on the day, but his desire to take on his man and deliver a cross will have given Ten Hag some food for thought going forward.
Yoro shows star quality immediately
It didn’t take long for Yoro to show why the Red Devils were willing to fork out £52million to acquire his services. The 18-year-old showed maturing beyond his years in possession, whilst also making a super challenge in the first half to prevent Cyriel Desserts from having a shot from close range.
