Jadon Sancho may have taken a thinly-veiled swipe at Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag after the winger reached the Champions League final on loan at Borussia Dortmund. The pair publicly fell out at the beginning of the season, with the 24-year-old banished from the first team before spending the second half of the campaign back in Germany.

Having failed to impress at Old Trafford three years on from his £72million move from Dortmund, Sancho has dispelled plenty of criticism during the Bundesliga club’s European run. He was one of the standout players across both semi-final legs against Paris Saint-Germain and will hope to make his mark once again in the final next month against either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

His situation has created an interesting juxtaposition after his parent club recently dropped to eighth in the Premier League table after a 4-0 thrashing at Crystal Palace, lacking the necessary attacking impetus that Sancho has provided for Dortmund after being cast aside by Ten Hag.

The knife may have been twisted further into United and Ten Hag on Instagram, where Dortmund’s official account posted a picture of a delighted Sancho alongside a meme of rapper Drake saying: “To the rest of you, the non-believers, the underachievers, the tweet and deleters, you guys made me sick to my stomach fam.”

Sancho then reposted Dortmund’s message to his critics onto his own story, adding: “Lol facts!” Many will feel that is a direct response to his doubters at Old Trafford, including Ten Hag, as he gears up to compete for European football’s top prize.

United are set to benefit from Sancho’s stellar performances while away on loan, as a clause in his Dortmund deal sees the Red Devils receive a reported £3.5million for reaching the final of the Champions League.

The winger also remains in the shop window ahead of what is set to be a big summer clear-out at United under their new INEOS hierarchy, spearheaded by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Sancho is thought to be among the players that United are willing to part ways with, as Ten Hag revealed that the club has met with the former England international during his loan spell.

When asked if Sancho could be reintegrated back into the United fold if he apologised, Ten Hag replied: “We are close in that process. We are visiting games, not only (first leg vs PSG), (I) will not say all the games, but we have seen more games from Dortmund where Jadon was performing. We had a visit with him, we talked with him, and we will keep going with this process.

“There was a conflict and let’s finish the season first. So stay away from this issue now – it is not important.”
