Erik ten Hag will have hoped he’d seen the last of the relentless injury crisis that contributed to derailing his second season as Manchester United manager. However, similar issues have resurfaced at the start of the current campaign, leaving him without 10 senior options against Fenerbahce.

United have travelled to Istanbul for the third instalment of their Europa League: League Phase campaign, having been held to frustrating draws by FC Twente and FC Porto in their opening two.

Tonight’s task? A reunion with Jose Mourinho, Fred, Sofyan Amrabat and a host of former Premier League stars at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

While Ten Hag’s squad depth improved over the summer, he will still be missing some key names for the clash in the Turkish capital.

Bruno Fernandes is the headline absentee. The United captain will be watching from home as he serves a one-match suspension for his red card at Porto.

His exclusion leaves Ten Hag with a major selection dilemma. Christian Eriksen will likely occupy a more advanced role, with Manuel Ugarte returning to the team to partner with Casemiro.

But the Dutchman could call on Amad Diallo or Joshua Zirkzee to slot in behind Rasmus Hojlund if he opts for a more direct approach.

Five of United’s 10 absentees are in defence. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are training on the grass, but Ten Hag is still without a first-team left-back.

Harry Amass, 17, has flown to Istanbul and is set to feature in a matchday squad for the first time this term, having been among the substitutes seven on occasions last season.

Leny Yoro is also back on the grass as he ramps up his injury recovery but isn’t yet ready to make his competitive United debut.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire has been ruled out for a few weeks, and Jonny Evans is sidelined with a knock, having missed training this week.

Four midfielders, including Kobbie Mainoo, are unavailable. The 19-year-old didn’t feature at Porto last time out in Europe and missed Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brentford.

Mason Mount hasn’t been since withdrawing during the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham earlier this month with a head injury.

Ten Hag has admitted that his recovery has taken longer than expected, but he expects the £60million man to return to contention soon.

Finally, Toby Collyer and Dan Gore are less experienced options but options who regularly train with the senior squad nonetheless.

Neither has been deemed fit enough to be included in the squad to face Fenerbahce, limiting United to just three midfielders.
