Man Utd have four alternative centre-back options.
Manchester United are reportedly prioritising a new centre-back signing ahead of Raphael Varane’s contract expiry at the end of the month. However, the Red Devils’ top three targets could soon be off the table, leaving INEOS scratching their heads over potential alternatives.
Jarrad Branthwaite appears to be at the top of the shortlist, considering United have already seen a £43million bid rejected by Everton.
The Toffees are said to be holding out for £70m, a fee which Sir Jim Ratcliffe won’t sanction. United will walk away if a compromise can’t be found.
They are also reportedly actively pursuing Lille’s Leny Yoro, one of Europe’s most highly-rated young centre-halves and available for just £34m.
But Real Madrid’s presence in the race for his signature has made it an almost impossible task for United, with the 18-year-old said to favour a switch to the Bernabeu.
Jean-Clair Todibo was considered an attractive fall-back option if Branthwaite remained at Goodison Park. INEOS’ ownership of Nice offered hope that it was an easy deal to do.
However, UEFA have blocked United from signing any Nice players due to both clubs playing in the Europa League next season. That has ended Todibo’s chances of joining, at least for this summer.
Express Sport looks at four potential alternatives who have been linked with United in recent weeks in case INEOS return to the drawing board.
Matthijs de Ligt has history with Erik ten Hag.
Marc Guehi
Marc Guehi has impressed for England at Euro 2024 after earning Gareth Southgate’s trust with his form for Crystal Palace.
The 23-year-old is claimed to be a United target, but Palace could demand as much as £65m to part ways with their star defender.
Matthijs de Ligt
Bayern Munich are reportedly looking to cash in on Matthijs de Ligt at the start of Vincent Kompany’s reign, reigniting links with a United switch.
De Ligt is one of Ten Hag’s former pupils, and the Dutchman would surely be interested in his latest Ajax reunion at Old Trafford.
Gleison Bremer
United have been strongly linked with Gleison Bremer for months – during and after a positive season as a crucial player at Juventus.
The 27-year-old has admitted he would like to play in the Premier League, so United’s interest could accelerate if Branthwaite grows out of reach.
Trevoh Chalobah
While Trevoh Chalobah is said to be keen on a Chelsea stay, the Blues are reportedly attempting to cash in on him to boost their summer transfer kitty.
United have been touted among the 24-year-old’s suitors and have a history of signing players from Stamford Bridge.
