Ruben Amorim may not be a familiar name in the Premier League, but he is highly regarded by certain Manchester United players. The 39-year-old has had an impressive career, mostly in Portugal, before transitioning into coaching.

Amorim began his coaching journey with Casa Pia, then moved to Braga Reserves and within three months he was promoted to the first team. This led to his appointment at Sporting in March 2020.

Since joining Estadio Jose Alvalade, the soon-to-be United head coach has bagged two top-flight medals, two Taca da Liga trophies, and the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. At just 39, Amorim will become the second youngest head coach in the Premier League upon his arrival.

Bruno Fernandes, who left Sporting before Amorim’s arrival, has previously praised his compatriot. Even Jose Mourinho recently dubbed Amorim as the best coach in Portugal.

However, it’s Manuel Ugarte who has the most recent experience with the incoming United head coach.

Ugarte was signed by Amorim in August 2021 for a fee of £4.5million. Initially brought in as cover for Joao Palhinha, Ugarte’s role expanded after Palhinha transferred to Fulham in 2022.

Palhinha’s departure was a turning point for Ugarte, who started all but six league matches for the 2022/23 season. After impressing at Sporting, Ugarte made a £51million move to Paris Saint-Germain, before signing for United this summer.

Amorim made headlines when he swapped out the Uruguayan ace for Morten Hjulmand, a hot prospect linked with United and boasting a hefty £67million release clause.

In a candid revelation about the switch, Amorim highlighted their distinct styles in September 2023, saying: “They are completely different characteristics.

“Morten doesn’t have Ugarte’s ability to find players from all sides of the pitch with incredible speed. Morten has, and Ugarte didn’t have, the ability to read the game, anticipate moves and be well positioned.”

He added: “We have to adapt the team to the players we have and Morten will also adapt to our way of playing, to our high pressing.”
